Setting Up Quick View on Windows 95/Windows NT to Preview Word 2000 Files

View products that this article applies to.
This article was previously published under Q211765

SUMMARY

The Quick View utility that ships with Microsoft Windows 95 or with Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 cannot preview files created in any of the Microsoft Office 2000 programs. By contrast, the Quick View utility that ships with Microsoft Windows 98 can preview Office 2000 files.

If you are running Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, you can use the Microsoft Word Viewer 97-2000 to preview Word 2000 files. This article describes how you can modify the options in Microsoft Windows Explorer so that you can use the Word Viewer 97-2000.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows Explorer lets you customize the items in the shortcut menu that appears when you right-click a file. For those file formats that cannot be opened in the Windows Quick View utility, you can use Word Viewer to preview files by using Quick View.

Before you follow these steps, download and install the Microsoft Word Viewer 97-2000. The viewer is contained in a self-extracting .exe file called Wd97vw32.exe on the Microsoft World Wide Web site. For additional information about obtaining and installing Word Viewer, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.

    2. Under Actions, click WordView, and then click Edit.
    3. Select the path and the file name that are listed in the Application used to perform action box, and then press CTRL+C to copy it to the Clipboard. Click Cancel.
  5. In the Edit File Type dialog box, follow these steps:
    1. Click New.
    2. Under Action, type &Quick View. The ampersand (&) indicates that the following letter (in this case, Q) can be used as a shortcut key to run the command.
    3. In the Application used to perform action box, press CTRL+V.
    4. Click OK.
  6. In the Edit File Type dialog box, under Actions, select WordView, and then click Remove. When you are prompted to remove WordView from the menu, click Yes.
